Not long after Williamson County schoolchildren started their academic year in Tennessee, a dozen or so nontraditional students—all experienced law enforcement officials—were also going back to school. But this class had a different agenda. These students were participating in a training seminar on ways to keep young people safe—safe from weather emergencies; safe from fire; and safe from the remote chance that violence could erupt on campus.

 

Featured as a Special Report in NRA’s December 2015 official journals, "Safeguarding our Children" explores the first National School Shield Security Assessor Training hosted by the NRA and discusses the benefits and opportunities for this vital program. A printable supplement summarizes the National School Shield program from background and objectives to program tools and resources as well as opportunities for supporters to get involved.

 

National School Shield Founding Director, Asa Hutchinson, presents and reviews the official report of the National School Shield Task Force, a 225-page document outlining a clear need to address school violence and recommendations on best practices in school security.
